Telling people a little bit about University of Idaho is probably a good place to start in generating some buzz and support for Joe Vandal in the Capital One Mascot Challenge. I was living in the Washington DC area when I decided to attend University of Idaho for my Master’s degree program. I was shocked when I came to find out that most people didn’t even know where Idaho was! Often times it was confused with Iowa or Ohio. This was my first clue that Idaho needed a little PR help.
University of Idaho is in Moscow, Idaho – a small (wonderful) town near the border of Washington (the state!) and Idaho. The enrollment is around 12,000 students and programs offer undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and law degrees. Our mascot (obviously!) is the spunky and lovable Joe Vandal and our colors are silver and Vandal gold. We’re a smaller school than many of those competing in the mascot challenge, but we’ve got a lot of pride and spirit. We’re especially excited about the recent successes of our Vandal Football team!
Last year, Idaho won the Humanitarian Bowl against Bowling Green of Ohio in what was (arguably) the best bowl game of the season. Down 7 with a mere eight seconds remaining, wide receiver Max Komar (now with NFL Arizona Cardinals) caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from QB Nathan Enderle (still with Vandals). With four seconds left the Vandals were within a point. Head coach Robb Akey decided to go for the win and forego overtime!!! On a two point conversion attempt, QB Nathan Enderle connected with Preston Davis (still with Vandals) in the end zone to give the Vandals the win, 43-42!!
Another reason Idaho football should be on the radar – Mike Iupati. Following the 2009 season, Senior left guard, Mike Iupati, was selected in the first round (17th pick) of the 2010 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers. Iupati now starts (#77) on the 49ers offensive line as a rookie!
This football season is starting off successfully for the Vandals. Unfortunately, it can be hard to catch the Vandals on national networks but the huge rivalry game against Boise State on Friday, November 12th is scheduled to be shown on ESPN2.
More to come on Joe Vandal and our 2010 Vandal football team. In the meantime, keep the votes coming for Joe in the Mascot Challenge! We’re locked in a tight competition this week with Vanderbilt’s “Mr.C” who we should be completely vandalizing!! Let’s go Vandal Nation – let’s show the country what we’ve got!!!
